Share an Inbox with Read-Only, Expiring Access

On this page

Create a limited inbox-sharing link, control attachment access and revoke the grant without exposing the inbox’s master access secret.

Inbox sharing creates a separate read-only grant for an inbox you are authorized to manage. It is useful when another person needs to inspect messages without receiving your account credentials or the mailbox’s main access secret.

Create only the access you intend

Use the inbox’s offered sharing controls, choose a supported duration and decide whether attachment access is appropriate. The grant cannot outlive its effective inbox access. A link is an access capability: send it only to the intended recipient and avoid posting it publicly.

Know what the viewer can see

A supported sharing session reads the granted mailbox’s messages. It is not a permission to change your account, send email or manage other inboxes. Attachment downloading is a separate permission. A read-only viewer may still copy visible text, codes or links, so share only mail you are comfortable exposing.

Revoke and verify

Remove the grant through its management controls when it is no longer needed. Check that an old viewer session can no longer read it. Expiry and revocation do not extend mailbox retention or restore expired mail. For Free Microsoft Alias views, also remember that the underlying source-mailbox model is already shared.

Should I share my account password instead?

No. Use the limited grant rather than sharing account credentials or a master inbox secret.

No. The inbox’s own expiry and retention rules continue to apply.
